The 2013 events are spilt into Open Days, Afternoon Workshops and Day Long Workshops.

Open Days have no restrictions on numbers, however Day Long and Afternoon Workshops do therefore book early!

Listed are the dates individuals can attend but the workshops can be repeated for groups of eight people or more. This arrangement may be more suitable for gardening clubs or groups of individuals that would like to attend on different dates. As in 2013, for group bookings you get three workshops (of the same type) for the price of two!

SNOWDROP OPEN DAY

Winter is coming to an end and what better way to welcome the spring than to share with us at Ballyrobert Cottage Garden our fledgling snowdrop displays and collection of rare varieties including ‘Wendy’s Gold’. A guided tour of the garden and its snowdrop collection will be provided.

HELLEBORES and COLOUR IN THE WINTER- Garden open day

Sunday 3rd  Mar 2013, 2-00pm to 4-00pm, £6 including Tea

Spring has arrived and hellebores are in full flower in the garden. Invite some friends and come along for advice, talks and demonstrations on this superb spring plant. Learn from Maurice Parkinson and the nursery staff how to pollinate and propagate hellebores in our nursery. A TASTE OF CHELSEA -An  open charity day.

Saturday 4th May 2013, 11-00am to 4-00pm. £5. Strawberry teas served all day extra.

 

NIGFAS (N.Ireland Group  of Flower Arranging Societies) have been invited by NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies) to stage an exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2014. To help the society with funds and highlight the honour we at Ballyrobert along with the NIGFAS Chelsea 2014 team have organised a special Open Day at the Garden and Nursery. In celebration of National Flower Arranging Day which also falls in this week visitors will be able to enjoy flower arranging  demonstrations throughout the day. There will be many other attractions including guided tours of the garden, as featured in Shirley Lanigan’s  “ Best 100 Gardens in Ireland”, gardening demonstrations, a treasure hunt, an interactive exhibit and Garden Art to admire.

PLANTING BORDERS IN THE GARDEN – Day long workshop.

The borders at Ballyrobert Cottage Garden are a key feature of the garden. Those choosing to attend will learn about the planning process involved in creating and constructing well designed borders. There will also be an opportunity to do some of the work!!

AN NTRODUCTION TO FLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY- afternoon workshop

Group size – 8-12  Discounts for group bookings.

The workshop will cover; an introduction to manual camera settings and the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO taking control of creativity. You will be shown, some basic principles of composition, and the importance of light, its quality and direction .

A bit of hands on fun with creative techniques incorporating how to take close up photographs without breaking the bank on specialist equipment.

Ideally suited  for relative beginners who haven’t explored the manual setting in their camera or who would like to have a go using equipment with manual setting before buying.

EVERY DAY FLOWERS – Day long workshop.

Ballyrobert Cottage Garden is famous for its brilliant displays of herbaceous plants. This is an opportunity to learn about the plants and how to maximise their impact and minimise their maintenance in the garden from Maurice Parkinson, the garden’s designer. Additionally Maurice will be joined by Cherry Townsend from Kilcoan Gardens who will create a stylish arrangement suitable for the home with flowers picked from the garden and one lucky participant will be able to bring this home.

NEW AND TOP PERFORMING PLANTS FOR NORTHERN GARDENS Morning workshop

Plant choice is one of the most important considerations when planting up the garden. However many plants sold can perform poorly this far north. At Ballyrobert  we can demonstrate  how an intelligent and knowledgeable choice can create magnificent displays in the garden.

GETTING THE BEST FROM GARDEN DESIGN – Day long workshop

This workshop provides an introduction to garden design but the essence of the event is to demonstrate how thoughtful design in every day activities in the garden can make a big difference especially from a visual impact perspective.

The following elements will be included:-

  • garden styles;
  • functional garden types;
  • use of focal and interest points;
  • choice of plants having regard to environmental and visual considerations; and
  • plants which perform well in our climate.

Many of our customers ask about the success (or otherwise) of the many varieties of plants we use in the garden, from fruit trees to herbaceous perennials. An afternoon has been allocated this year to allow plant enthusiasts to find out what happens behind the scenes at Ballyrobert. Learn in particular how the garden is maintained to such a high standard  with the minimum of effort .

PLANTS FOR FREE – Day long workshop

Saturday 31st August 2013, 11-00am to 4-00pm. £45 including Tea & Lunch.

Ballyrobert Cottage Garden and Nursery propagates and grows the bulk of the plants it sells and uses in garden design projects. That is a lot of propagation!! How do we do it?

This workshop is an opportunity to learn a range of propagation techniques, as utilised in our nursery and which can be used successfully in ones own garden whether for ornamental or edible plants. Those attending will also be shown how to deal with the critical early stages of growing on newly propagated plants including choice of compost and growing location.

The workshop allows the attendees to bring home the plants they have propagated.
